Dumb Rules

Oh the irony of it all!

I have the worst time keeping in touch with my friends and family. Unless you use email or Facebook you are screwed with me. As we have discussed before, I suck at phone calls. I’ve gotten better, but not by much. So, we can deduce from this that the last thing I need is another person to keep in touch with.

I volunteered at the Community Reach Center’s annual golf tournament this week. I ended up working along side a very sweet and hilarious lady named Margaret. She had me cracking up throughout the day. It made the whole tournament go by pretty fast and we enjoyed each other’s company.

Fast forward to the end of the day. It is time for me to depart and she and I begin our goodbyes. “It was great chatting with you” “I really enjoyed the day with you” “It was fun getting to know you” and then the deadly exclamation point…

“we should exchange information”

Poor soul, she has no idea what she is saying. Then she mentioned Facebook. Well then! That’s easy!

And yet not so. She sent me a friend request but I realized in the day or so after our meeting that I cannot be her friend. No, not because I suck at keeping in touch. Alas, it is because I am not “allowed” to.

I am on the board of directors. Board members are not allowed to be friends with employees. (sigh)

So, not that I would go hang out with Margaret or even have a phone chat, I am not allowed to even accept her friend request. I was not planning on having another huge friendship in my life, I have plenty of people in my life at this moment that complete me. But, just to have a laugh with once in a while. I sent Margaret a message letting her know of my dilemma. She said whatever I need to do is fine and she gave me her email address.

What if she and I were friends before I became a board member or her an employee? Would I have to sever ties with her or keep it a secret? I want to be her Facebook friend. That is where the laughs can happen. Dammit! She has one other employee as a friend on her page and that could get me in hot water. I spend most of my free time with the center, either with personal stuff or as a board member or volunteering. This is the only place I meet people!

Oh, the irony of it all!!!

  2. The rules that surround your board are pretty weird. And so are the rules that surrond FB use, like with my company. Maybe we should be able to be friends with whomever we would like.

Bri...I think it is a rabble rouser...
